Open Thread - Submit your questions and comments

If you're reading from your office or home and you have any questions or issues you'd like to bring up, submit them in the comments here and I'll do my best to pass them along to today's panelists (and I'll post the responses in the comments here as well).

The next two panels will focus on the regulatory environment, with representatives from state and federal government agencies, then a panel on "conflicts and solutions" after lunch, with panelists from NRCM, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Dept. of Marine Resources, and from the fisheries industry.

Fire away!

Great blog.

The greatest opportunity is in the class 4 & 5 winds, which are near shore.
1. Let towns that want the tax revenue and local jobs from wind farms near shore be encouraged to zone for them?
2. Last resort, the State zones for wind?
3. Individual companies can always make proposals on our coast.
4. Note that as wind power technology improves, its power cost can be made as cheap as coal (cheaper even).
5. Maine should go for this technology where it can, which are not blades and tower sections, but development of a fiberglass composite nacelle and its internal mechanical/electrical improvements. This is technology that is affordable to develop and could be an important new Maine industry. I understand DOE wants or may support development of wind turbine mechanicals that do better in light air (class-3 winds).
6. I personally believe it is not unrealistic to expect 50,000 (if not more) of 4-MW class wind turbines to be installed across this country in the ensuing 10 years, if they can be made more cost-effective in class-3 winds, i.e. approach 40% capacity factor.
